The world cup finally kicked off, literally… And boy if anyone else watched the colorful performances to open the games, they too saw all the beauty that my eyes witnessed… I wished i was there, as in i actually wished it, but hey a girl can only dream…
We saw our own Femi Kuti rep Najia by performing his mega hit “beng beng beng” which ironically is banned in Nigeria… A bit of a shame that a song which is cherished all over Africa and the world is banned in its own origin… But i digress…
Bafana Bafana (the nickname for South Africa’s team) is ranked #83 in the world and they didn’t only hold their own with the Mexican team ranked #17 in the world, but even looked like they were going to waltz out the joint with a win after Tshabalala (my new favorite name, next to Adechike) scored a blazing goal as sin in the pic, in the 55th minute… But then soon after the goal, Bafana bafana indeed began to waltz through the game and stopped trying to attack and rather began to try and play defense… which in my opinion was a horrid idea because it never works for African countries, WE CAN’T PLAY SLOW SOCCER!!! We are designed to run and gun like the hunters we are… lolol… That strategy only seems to work for European teams… I mean Brazil would never do that… they attack and attack and attack.. I hope Nigeria plays well tomorrow..
Anyway Marquez about 30 minutes later is left alone after a crossed in free kick by Mexico and only had 1 South African player around him and seemed to take the whole hour he was given but Bafana bafana to align his shot onto and into the net… Given Mexico a draw which they were pleased with in comparison to the defeat they could have suffered…
I am going to blog as much about the world cup as i can, especially Naija and Cameroonian matches… so till then, let’s hope we win it all… Go Naija, Go SA!!!!
